Saturday, 13 October 2018, 11.00-14.00: An intensive course in language teaching methodology: Is there a best method?

The session aims to answer many of the questions teachers ask about approaches, methods and techniques in English language teaching: Which method should I choose and why?Should I teach grammar directly or indirectly? Is it OK to use the mother-tongue and when? How can I teach vocabulary more systematically? How can I use pair and group-work effectively? What do we mean by inductive versus deductive teaching?  The session will explain the principles behind the most influential approaches to teaching English as an international language: grammar-translation, direct method, audio-lingual, communicative/functional, humanistic (Total Physical Response, Suggestopedia, Community Language Learning, the Silent Way), multiple intelligences, the lexical approach, task-based learning and CLIL. By the end of the session, you will understand key concepts in ELT and feel more confident in  applying  them in a practical way in the wide variety of teaching situations in which you will find yourself.

What kind of relationships do they encourage in the classroom? For each of the proven secrets of expert teachers we will give examples of techniques that effective teaching a reality in the classroom. For example: if building self-esteem in their learners is one of the secrets of the good teacher, what can we do to incorporate self-esteem into the way use a textbook or teach grammar?

We will also consider how the digital revolution has changed what is expected of the good teacher. The aim is for you to go away with the ‘technology of good teaching’: the techniques which reflect what we know about successful teaching.

Which  techniques  reflect and develop the diverse reasons for engaging in listening and reading? How is teaching these skills in exam classes different from teaching them for the real world? You will go away with a range of practical techniques for skimming, scanning, intensive and extensive listening and reading in an engaging and interactive manner.

Part 2: The aim of this session is tounderstandand learn toteach effectively the ‘productive skills speaking and writing. We will look at the way both skills involve developing both accuracy and fluency and giving students confidence to overcome the fear of producing spoken and written texts in a foreign language. You will take away an abundance of tried and tested techniques for motivating students to speak and write, drawn from the experience of our professions finest practitioners.

Sunday, 14 October 2018, 15.00-18.00: Dealing with diversity and discipline: practical techniques for teaching multi-cultural and  mixed-level classes.

The default position in most classes in the 21stcentury is variety and individual differences. The problem has been compounded by the many digital distractions students face. This session takes into account the need to cope with thediversityby developing techniques for differentiated learning while at the same time maintaining disciplinein the class as a whole. In this workshop, we shall understand the underlying and surface causes of ‘bad behaviour’ or inattention; we shall go on to practise techniques for engaging the attention of the class, especially disruptive students,  and getting students to listen to each other and to interact with other students. You will take away practical procedures for effective classroom management, meeting individual student needs in whole-class, group and pairwork, drawing directly and indirectly in the students mother-tongue, and, above all techniques for building rapport and self-esteem in mixed level groups.
